  • In-Seat, Mobile Ordering a Proven Next-Generation Success at BCPlace

Have you ever been at a game, rooting for your team as it teeters on the edge of glory, only to duck away to get a bite and … miss the crucial play? Yes, us too. It’s heartbreaking.

A new innovation in stadium service might just make that fan experience history. At BC Place in Vancouver, thanks to hospitality partner Centerplate, fans can order food from their seats and get it delivered … while never taking eyes off the game. And, best of all, there’s no need to download an app.

You merely scan the QR code on the seatback and order from your own mobile device, sending the request virtually to the nearest kitchen where the Centerplate culinary team preps the meal.

“When people see it, there is definitely a wow factor,” says Centerplate General Manager Paul McArdle at BC Place. “Fans see everyone next to them using it, and word travels fast. We see guests sit down and open their phone right away to order. By the time they get settled, they are eating.”

With a relatively tight concourse at the 26-year-old stadium, keeping fans in their seats and out of the concourse eases congestion and makes everyone happier in the 54,500-seat venue.

Already the solution has seen, on average, an incredible 26 percent adoption rate — compared to the 1 – 1.5% for similar programs at other stadiums. Add in that the spend on an in-seat order is, on average, 40 percent higher than the average order and excitement has continued to grow.

The solution, in fact, was named a finalist for the 2019 Venue Technology Award in TheStadiumBusiness Awards 2019.
