A Sense of Belonging Benefits Students’ Well-Being

When it comes to improving academic performance and protecting students’ mental health, fostering a sense of belonging is critical.

Having a sense of belonging is important at any age, but for children and teens the idea of “belonging” can be especially important. Research shows that students who experience a sense of belonging have improved academic outcomes and better mental health. These effects can persist over time, suggesting that belonging has a lasting impact on students’ well-being.

We’ve partnered with thousands of schools to help foster a greater sense of student belonging by providing unique opportunities for fun, engaging dining experiences that bring students together day after day.

What does belonging mean in a school setting?

Belonging is a feeling of inclusion, understanding and social connection. If students feel like welcomed members of their school’s community, it can motivate them to work harder, deepen their relationships with peers and uplift others.

These interactions can happen in both in the lunchroom and through special on-campus events. For example, Sodexo’s Future Chefs National Challenge is a 15-year tradition that has brought together over 15,000 student competitors from across the country. This friendly competition was initially designed to help students learn about nutrition and cooking, but student feedback and participation levels have indicated its impact goes much deeper in fostering student belonging.

Many of our previous student competitors said this event was their favorite activity in elementary school, as it enabled them to engage with other chefs-in-training and enjoy a sense of comradery with students from different states.

What are the benefits of student belonging?

When students feel a sense of belonging with their fellow students and teachers, they experience noticeable shifts in behavior and academic performance, according to research. One study found that students with a strong sense of belonging are more likely to engage in learning, participate in class and develop positive relationships with their teachers. This leads to higher grades, better attendance and improved persistence in challenging tasks.

Belonging has also been shown to reduce anxiety and stress, which are major issues for today’s students. Feeling accepted and valued can also boost students’ self-esteem and confidence. This positive self-view is crucial, as it encourages students to engage more fully in their academic and social lives today, as well as feel more empowered in the future.

Build your students’ sense of belonging with Sodexo

Your school community plays a pivotal role in helping your students experience a sense of belonging. And our role as your partner is simple: help you create an environment that promotes inclusion and belonging so students can thrive. For example, at the Francis Howell School District in Missouri, our Bright Bites kitchen hosts “Tasty Tuesdays” at elementary schools to give students the opportunity to taste and give feedback on new menu items. It’s an engaging experience that allows all students to feel like they are a part of the school community.

In Springfield Public Schools in Massachusetts, we helped lunch participation among high school students jump from 50% to 79%, which means more students have an opportunity to connect with each other over a meal.

If your goal is to foster a greater sense of belonging in your students and help them thrive today and in the future, we’re here to help.
