From Administrative Assistant to General Manager (GM), Alison Litzky’s journey shows how saying ‘yes’ to new challenges and the right support can shape a successful career.

The greatest opportunities often lie just outside our comfort zones. It’s in those moments of uncertainty that we discover our true potential. For General Manager Alison Litzky, stepping outside her comfort zone has been the key to unlocking her confidence, taking on new challenges, and transforming her career.

As General Manager of the Sisters of Christian Charity in Mendham, NJ, Alison oversees the daily operations of facilities management, from strategic planning and team leadership to ensuring maintenance, safety protocols, and client satisfaction. Her role demands adaptability, critical thinking, and a commitment to people and performance. For Alison, this is more than a job, it’s a purpose.

A Journey Fueled by Mentorship and Determination

Alison began her career as an administrative assistant at the Sisters of Christian Charity six years ago, where she quickly developed the foundational skills to grow. A pivotal moment came when she began working with her former General Manager, Joe Assante, who became a mentor for her development.

“Joe helped me understand that leadership is about taking initiative, embracing new opportunities, and continually learning,” she says. “With the right mentorship, you’re empowered to trust yourself and your abilities, and that’s been key to my growth.”

Joe’s guidance had a lasting impact. He involved her in key projects, encouraged her to participate in development programs, and gave her opportunities to grow. One of the most defining moments was when she helped facilitate a new hire orientation, an experience she once feared due to public speaking.

“I knew this was a chance to come out of my comfort zone and push myself, and I was surprised by how well I did,” she recalls.

This willingness to step outside her comfort zone became a habit. Alison sought feedback, enrolled in Sodexo’s GM Development Program, and connected with GMs across the company. These conversations inspired her to pursue a master’s in management and leadership; a decision that continues to fuel her growth today.

Building a Team-Centered Culture

Today, Alison brings the same positive energy and empowerment to her own team.

Employee engagement is one of her top priorities. From an employee wheel of appreciation and team member of the month to birthday and holiday celebrations, Alison makes sure employees feel valued and recognized. Her approach has helped build a culture where people feel seen and supported.

“It’s all about them. We’re behind the scenes, but they’re doing the hard work, and we want to recognize that,” Alison explains.

From summer BBQs to honoring cultural heritage months, Alison takes pride in how her team celebrates and supports each other’s unique cultures and stories.

Leading by Example and Preparing the Next Generation

Alison leads with intention, whether it’s moving furniture, troubleshooting issues, or starting the day with a motivational quote and a morning team huddle. Open communication is key to her leadership style, and she makes sure every voice on her team is heard.

Alison isn’t just focused on leading; she’s committed to helping others grow. She recently hired a young female facilities supervisor and is committed to mentoring her, just as her former GM, Joe, once mentored her.

“Joe prepared me for the next step in my career, and now it’s my turn to do that for others,” Alison says. “I hope one day she sees me as a mentor and feels empowered to lead just like I was.”

As a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field, Alison understands how impactful it can be to see women in positions of leadership. She credits Sodexo’s focus on developing talent and creating opportunities for women as key to her growth and success.

“Sodexo does a great job hiring and promoting women,” Alison says. “It’s one of the things I really admire about our company. When you see women in these roles, it makes you believe that you can do it too.”

Looking Ahead

Alison’s journey from administrative assistant to general manager is a journey filled with determination, mentorship, and a genuine love for leadership. She leads with heart, leads by example, and never stops growing. Her team sees it. Her mentors see it. And future leaders will benefit from it.

“It’s been a great experience being a GM. Ultimately, it’s my team, they’re like my work family. I’m proud of what we’ve built, and I’m excited to keep growing alongside them.”
