These genuine moments promote psychological safety, and in turn create an environment that encourages social connection, which is a key pillar of mental health.

Alain Morize, Senior Vice President of Operations, handles offshore operations in the Gulf of Mexico for Sodexo. When you are offshore or in a mining camp for weeks at a time, it can be very lonely. Newcomers may feel isolated. After a tough day, many just want to go to their rooms and watch TV — but it is essential for them to build relationships with their teammates.

How do you create a place where workers want to engage after a long shift? How do you make them feel that an offshore rig or mining camp is their home away from home?

By focusing on everyday moments that matter.

It’s having a room ready to go as the bus arrives on-site. It's providing a variety of dining options to meet every craving, or hosting an exciting game of trivia in the dining hall, or even just a "good morning" from the barista serving up coffee — it’s the little things that turn a work site into a community.

You don’t really understand until you see it, said Stephanie Hertzog, CEO of Sodexo Energy & Resources North America. It took 48 hours of travel time and four COVID tests, but I finally got to visit a camp we mobilized throughout the pandemic in Kitimat, BC. The heart of this team was undeniable as soon as I walked through the door. It does start with the everyday, and that starts with you.
