Future culinary stars aren’t letting something like age get in their way as they participate in the nationwide 2020 Future Chefs Challenge.

The Sodexo-sponsored competition, in its 10th year, begins this season with hundreds of school districts inviting students ages 5-12 to create  and submit a recipe that reimagines their favorite school lunch meal.

With thousands of students expected to participate, and get coaching and support from Sodexo teams, the challenge helps kids learn about cooking and healthy eating. It also teaches them about competition as their recipes will be evaluated during several rounds of judging that measure taste, health value, simplicity and creativity.

In the spring, five finalists will be chosen. Each of them will be tasked with creating a video of themselves preparing their dish, And, through online voting, the public will get to choose which they like best and who will get bragging rights - as well as special prizes and a spot on school lunch menus -- for the next year.

Last year’s finalists (below) were winnowed to the eventual winner, Addie Borgmann from Nebraska’s Elkhorn Public Schools. She created Skinny Mini Mexi Meatball Boats. In the video below, she walks us through her process.
