Managing Our Environmental Impact

As an employer, we embed environmental responsibility into our operations and ensure every team member is educated and trained on sustainability as part of our dedication to nurture our planet. Our journey as a service provider targets a reduction in carbon emissions on our way to Net Zero by 2040, underlining our efforts to source responsibly and manage resources effectively. As corporate citizens, we're set on cutting food waste by 50% at sites crucial to our operations, highlighting our commitment to sustainable resource usage.

Our Role as an Employer

We are committed to fostering a culture of environmental responsibility within our workforce and workspaces.

Every employee has a role to play in Sodexo’s pursuit of being environmentally responsible. From preventing waste to eliminating nonessential packaging and sourcing responsibly, we aim to integrate environmental and corporate responsibility across the culture of the company.

We use various methods to reach our workforce with the appropriate resources and tools, including universal and customized trainings, an employee best-practices sharing group and a designated resource online hub.

Our Role as a Service Provider

We are committed to sourcing responsibly and providing management services that reduce carbon emissions.

Achieving our industry-leading climate ambitions will require realigning business priorities, creating opportunities for just, transformational innovations.

We measure our direct contributions to carbon emissions, carbon emissions from our supply chain, and the energy used and waste created at our clients' sites.

Companies must make a collective effort to limit global warming to 1.5°C to prevent the worst effects of climate change. This is the boundary to keep our planet livable according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

We continue to look for more and better ways to reduce environmental impacts, including renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Our Role as a Corporate Citizen

We are committed to championing sustainable resource usage.

This means managing, reducing and preventing waste through programs, initiatives, innovative systems and technologies, awareness and behavior measures and applying the principles of a circular economy.

Every year, 30% to 40% of the food produced in the U.S. for human consumption gets lost or wasted, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Solutions across the food system can significantly improve food insecurity, carbon emissions and economic value.

As part of that system, we are committed to sustainable resource usage. We minimize food loss and food waste by planning to eliminate excess food, recover donatable food and repurpose food scraps for animals.

Single-use packaging, long a staple of the food services industry, contributes to landfill waste and human health costs. Sodexo seeks to reduce waste as much as possible by first examining opportunities to eliminate items and choosing reusable packaging options, and then sourcing the most circular solutions possible by aligning materials to available waste recovery streams.

In 2024, Sodexo received a score of 72/100, placing us in the 95th percentile of all companies and the top 2% of companies in the food and beverage services industry.
