A Story of Strength and Support: How Sodexo Stood By Joanne Martino

For over four decades, Joanne Martino has been a dedicated leader at Sodexo, steadily rising through the ranks from starting as a cashier in 1983 to now being a District Manager for Corporate Services in the New York Metro Area, overseeing 20 account contracts with hundreds of employees. But beyond the milestones and achievements, her journey is one marked by resilience, family devotion, and the unwavering support of her Sodexo community during some of her most difficult moments.
When Life Took an Unexpected Turn
In 2015, while on vacation, Joanne was involved in a severe car accident that changed her life overnight. Her injuries were severe with 23 broken bones, including her neck, keeping her out of work for more than five months. During this critical time, Sodexo’s leadership demonstrated genuine care. The company president and senior leaders personally visited her in the ICU, making sure she and her family knew they were not alone.
Throughout her recovery, Sodexo provided full support, offering the time and resources she needed to heal without the added stress of job insecurity. Joanne recalls, “My team brought food to my house, walked my dog, and did everything they could to support me after I left the hospital." This kindness left a lasting impression and strengthened her sense of belonging within the company.
Becoming a Caretaker
Just two years later, in 2017, her husband Nino faced a life-changing health crisis. What began as a routine surgery led to a brain injury that caused global aphasia and apraxia. These neurological conditions affect his ability to communicate and perform daily tasks. Overnight, she became the head of household and primary caregiver, managing both the emotional and practical challenges of their new reality.
Despite facing significant personal challenges, Joanne never felt isolated or singled out at work. “We have amazing leaders who supported me every step of the way,” she shares. “Thanks to them, I was able to continue leading my team and advancing my career without being defined by having a disabled husband.” The company’s culture of genuine support and inclusiveness empowered her to balance her professional responsibilities alongside her new demands at home.
In addition to compassionate leadership and a supportive team, she found Sodexo’s Employee Assistance Program to be a valuable resource. When she sought care options and support services for her husband, the program guided her through the complexities of healthcare and caregiving systems.
A Legacy of Support and Family at Sodexo
Joanne’s connection to Sodexo runs deep. Four members of her family, including her husband, son, daughter-in-law, and brother, have collectively dedicated over 90 years of service to the company. This shared commitment has built a strong foundation of support both inside and outside the workplace.
With decades of dedication, Joanne has fully embodied Sodexo’s values of belonging to a team, acting with purpose, and thriving in her own way. She played a key role in launching SOAR, an employee business resource group focused on disability support. This initiative was inspired by her experience growing up with a brother who has down syndrome. Joanne reflects, “Growing up with my brother shaped the person and leader I am today.” Her ongoing involvement with SOAR has also been a vital source of support as she took on the role of caretaker for her husband.
For Joanne, Sodexo truly feels like family. Not only has the company supported her through some of life’s darkest moments, but it has also allowed her to grow her career while raising two children. She shares, “I never felt like I had to choose between career progression and family. I have always been supported.”
A Powerful Example of Support in Action
Joanne’s experience highlights how a supportive workplace culture can make all the difference when life presents unexpected hurdles. “If you know someone interested in exploring new roles at Sodexo or joining the organization but feels held back because they have a sick child, spouse, or parent, encourage them by letting them know it’s possible and to put their name forward,” Joanne advises.
Sodexo’s commitment to caring for its people goes beyond business and embraces the whole person, recognizing employees not just as professionals but as individuals navigating life’s ups and downs.
