We had the privilege of meeting with Genia to hear about her remarkable journey, spanning from her days as a frontline employee to her current role as an Executive Chef.

Meet Genia Mack, Sodexo Executive Chef at Broadcom Duluth, located in Duluth, Georgia. Nearly two decades ago, Genia embarked on her journey with Sodexo as a frontline employee in Maryland. After relocating to Georgia, she transitioned to the position of a cashier at Jumping Jack Café, another Sodexo account. Genia’s dedication and strong work ethic then led her to secure a frontline position at Broadcom Duluth, where she began her journey from a frontline role to her current position as the Executive Chef.

Her adaptability allowed her to transition seamlessly between positions, spanning from deli and grill operations to dishwasher, cook, and catering responsibilities at Broadcom Duluth. Genia’s ability to seamlessly transition between roles, along with her consistently positive demeanor, did not escape the notice of her manager, Tony. Observing her dynamic skill set and recognizing untapped potential, Tony envisioned Genia in a capacity beyond her current role.

At the time, Tony sought an Executive Chef to collaborate with him in the kitchen, seeking someone with a great attitude, a robust work ethic, and a willingness to learn. Recognizing Genia’s potential, he offered her a unique opportunity to work alongside him and learn the skills needed to succeed as an Executive Chef.

Tony saw something different in me. The opportunity he gave me showed it was my turn for something greater and I wasn’t overlooked when it mattered.”

Tony evolved beyond being Genia’s boss; he became her mentor. With his guidance, she acquired the tools essential for excelling as an Executive Chef.

“I’ve had bosses before, but I’ve never had a mentor to help me do bigger and better things. Tony’s mentoring has given me a chance to grow at Sodexo,” Genia emphasizes.

Genia’s promotion to an executive position from a frontline role within the company set a precedent. This inspired other managers to assess their frontline employees, identifying those with potential for advancement. The ripple effect of internal promotions within the company ensued, fostering a supportive and collaborative environment.

Transitioning from a frontline role to becoming an Executive Chef posed tough challenges for Genia. However, rather than deterring her, this journey made her stronger. The support from Tony and her colleagues gave her the necessary tools to persevere.

“Where I come from, we always say, don’t leave before the miracle happens. This phrase inspires me to keep coming back and to never quit.”

Genia drew inspiration from her upbringing and familial roots, where she cultivated a love for cooking alongside her grandparents at the age of five. Tony’s mentorship, combined with Genia’s determination, increased her confidence, allowing her to add a unique touch to the dishes she creates.

The love and creativity Genia infuses into her culinary creations resonate with both the customers and colleagues. The facility’s customers and employees consistently greet her with smiles and words of encouragement, emphasizing the value she brings to their dining experience.

“The customers are a blessing. I find so much peace that there is a place where I can come and know that I matter,” Genia exclaims.

Genia’s inspiring journey reflects the power of perseverance, strong work ethic, and supportive mentorship. Her story not only highlights personal achievement but also is inspiring to others navigating their professional career paths.

As we celebrate Genia’s success, let her experience be a reminder that with determination and supportive guidance, one can overcome challenges and reach new heights in their career.
