Is Your Resume Hurting Your Job Search?
Are you submitting multiple applications but not getting a callback? Your resume could be hurting your job search – or at least hindering it.
Most job postings receive hundreds of applications, so when a recruiter or hiring manager looks at your resume, they are looking for specific words, phrases and concepts that match the qualifications of the position they’re hiring. This gives you only a few seconds to stand out from other applicants. If your resume is lacking specifics, then your application may be passed over.
Use these tips to improve the quality of keywords in your resume and increase your chances of landing a job interview:
1. Find the right keywords
If you’re not sure what kind of keywords to use, a great place to look is in the job posting. Most job postings will include the keywords you want to use. Try looking in the qualifications and responsibilities section of the post. How can you be sure you’ve found the right words? Scan similar job postings to find common keywords. If you notice the same words each posting, you’ll know you’ve found the right ones.
2. What kind of keywords do you need?
You’ll want to include a variety of keywords throughout your entire resume. Make sure you include:
- Technical Skills
- Certifications and Licenses
- Soft Skills – (i.e. time management, communication)
- Action Keywords – (i.e. achieved, implemented, increased)
3. Adding keywords to your resume
Now that you’ve found the keywords you want to use, you need to add them in the right place. Overstuffing your resume with keywords or only using them in one location is just as bad as not having any at all! Include them in your summary, work experience, skills section and anywhere else that contains information related to your hard and soft skills. Think about “sprinkling” them throughout the resume.
4. Tailor your resume for each job posting
Would you use the same recipe to bake a batch of cookies and bake a cake? No! So why would you would you use the same resume for different job postings? Take the time to customize the keywords and your accomplishments for each application you submit. This will make it easier for recruiters and hiring managers to identify that your skills match their needs.
Building a great resume is worth the time it takes to create, and adding relevant keywords and phrases is one way to ensure your application gets spotted.
