From Intern to Associate Sales Executive: How One Internship Sparked a Meaningful Career at Sodexo

When you picture a career that begins with an internship, you might imagine a short-term learning experience followed by a move elsewhere. For Emily Bazelak, Associate Sales Executive for the Northeast, her internship at Sodexo became the foundation for a career shaped by growth, mentorship, and purpose. Her journey highlights what is possible when early-career talent is trusted, developed, and encouraged to explore new paths.
Based in the Washington D.C. and Baltimore area, Emily first joined Sodexo as a Sales and Writing Intern on the Campus Commercial Growth team during the summer and fall of her senior year in college. At the time, she was looking for an opportunity to apply her English degree in a practical, business-focused way. She did not realize this internship would open the door to a long-term career in sales.

Turning Classroom Skills Into Real Experience
During her internship, Emily worked closely with the Campus Commercial Growth team on real, high-impact business initiatives. She assisted with rewriting and revising FY22 campus proposals, helping ensure messaging was clear, compelling, and aligned with client needs. She participated in planning meetings, where she gained exposure to how large-scale proposals are structured, reviewed, and refined.
In addition, Emily conducted industry research to support proposal development and collaborated with upper-level management to improve proposal quality and win rates. Her role allowed her to see how strategy, storytelling, and data come together to influence client decisions.
“It exposed me to what Sodexo was selling, how we were selling it, and ways we might be able to improve,” Emily explains. “It was the first time I truly saw how my writing and critical thinking skills could drive real business outcomes.”
As an intern, Emily was treated as a contributor rather than an observer. That level of trust helped her build confidence and gain a deeper understanding of sales strategy within the Campus segment.
A Career Built Through Opportunity
After graduating, Emily returned to Sodexo the following fall in a full-time role as Senior Executive Assistant supporting the National Senior Vice President of New Business for Campus, as well as the National Vice President of New Business for Government. In this role, she worked closely with senior leaders, gaining firsthand insight into how large, complex sales organizations operate.
Over time, Emily also supported several other leaders across multiple segments. These included the Vice President of Human Resources for Campus and Government, and the Chief Commercial Officer for Healthcare and Seniors. Each role expanded her perspective and deepened her understanding of how different parts of the business drive growth.
This experience gave Emily what she describes as a front-row seat to leadership. She listened closely, observed decision-making, and learned how successful sales leaders motivate teams, build relationships, and win business.
“I paid attention to how leaders communicated, how they prepared, and how they inspired confidence. Those experiences still influence how I show up in my role today,” Emily says.
Mentorship That Made a Lasting Difference
One of the most impactful elements of Emily’s journey has been her mentorship relationship with Mel Sweeney Fetzer. Mel originally hired Emily as an intern after recognizing the unique value she could bring as an English major and former student.
“People often assumed I would become a teacher because of my major,” Emily states. “It was incredibly motivating to have a leader who saw broader possibilities for me.”
Mel understood the importance of storytelling in sales and recognized Emily’s ability to connect ideas, audiences, and messaging. Even as Emily transitioned into different roles, Mel continued to advocate for her growth. She encouraged Emily to remain involved in proposal writing and editing, creating opportunities for her to contribute beyond traditional administrative responsibilities.
Emily shares, “Mel expected excellence from day one and that expectation made me want to give nothing less.”
A Day in the Life of a Sales Executive
Today, as an Associate Sales Executive, Emily’s daily routine varies depending on whether she is traveling. When working remotely, she spends her time in proposal meetings, prospecting calls, and outreach emails. When on the road, her days may begin with early flights followed by campus tours, client meetings, and strategic planning sessions with prospective partners.
No matter the setting, Emily’s focus remains the same. She works to understand client needs, builds trust, and supports initiatives that enhance campus dining and student experience.
Finding Purpose Through Sales at Sodexo
Emily always knew she wanted to take her English degree in an unexpected direction. Her studies sharpened her writing skills while also teaching her how to think critically, understand people, and use storytelling to influence decisions, making sales a natural fit.
She chose Sodexo because she believes in the mission. As a former student, Emily understands how essential nutrition, community, and belonging are to academic success.
“Some of my best college memories were made over meals with friends,” Emily reflects. “Being able to support solutions that enhance students’ well-being and campus life makes the work feel personal.”
Emily is proud to represent a company committed to sustainability and social responsibility. She values Sodexo’s focus on reducing environmental impact, promoting responsible sourcing, and supporting communities through food insecurity initiatives, local hiring, and partnerships. This work makes her role feel meaningful beyond day-to-day responsibilities.
A Message for Future Interns
For students and early-career professionals considering Sodexo, Emily encourages them to focus on building relationships and staying connected.
