The Journey of a Senior Area General Manager at Sodexo
Explore how Kathleen’s career journey showcases overcoming challenges, building community, supporting growth, and demonstrating how perseverance and leadership create new opportunities.
In the dynamic environment of Sodexo, Kathleen Tisdale, Senior Area General Manager, stands out for their dedication, resilience, and remarkable career journey. From feeding Marines to leading teams across diverse locations, their story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the supportive culture at our company.
A Career of Transformation and Growth
Kathleen began their journey with us in 2010, taking on the challenging role of General Manager for Government Services Marine Corps Feeding. Despite the obstacles, they transformed the facility’s mess hall from “worst to first,” creating a welcoming environment for the Marines. Kathleen’s commitment went beyond just providing meals; they made the mess hall a home base, celebrating holidays with elaborate decorations and fostering a strong sense of community.
Kathleen’s success in Marine Corps feeding opened doors to new opportunities. They transitioned into a retail manager role in healthcare, where their passion for employee and patient interaction flourished. Kathleen believed that food service was more than just meals, it was about making guests and families feel cared for. Their leadership and dedication eventually earned them their current role of Senior Area General Manager, overseeing multiple locations and supporting new openings in Nashville.
Beyond their professional achievements, Kathleen is involved in many different important causes. They are deeply involved in our Stop Hunger initiative, where they spearhead efforts to combat food insecurity. Their passion for helping others also led them to support the Zebra Coalition, a nonprofit that assists homeless LGBTQ+ youth living with anxiety, providing them with essential resources and a safe space. Additionally, Kathleen is a proud co-chair of our Employee Business Resource Group (EBRG) PRIDE, where they advocate for inclusivity and equality within the workplace.
Overcoming Challenges and Leading with Compassion
Kathleen’s career journey involved overcoming challenges, including adapting to new industries and roles such as healthcare and facilities management. However, we provided them with the necessary training and support, enabling them to grow and excel in each position.
“Sodexo provides so many opportunities for employees to take advantage of, from mentoring to the numerous amounts of training programs available. I took advantage of what was right in front of me, and I made the time to make it happen,” Kathleen shares.
This highlights that sometimes, the most vital advocate in one’s career is oneself. Employees need to have confidence in their abilities and push beyond their comfort zones to realize their full potential. By actively reaching out to managers, utilizing available resources, and demonstrating a willingness to learn, employees can advocate for their growth. When individuals fully commit to their goals and believe in their capabilities, others will also recognize and support their potential.
Kathleen emphasizes, “You matter. Your dreams matter. Everyone who works for Sodexo matters. Don’t be the person that holds yourself back and don’t let anyone hold you back either. Choose yourself.”
Stepping into the Senior Area General Manager position, Kathleen wanted to be a strong mentor to other employees, as leaders had been to them. Kathleen’s compassion for people and determination to help employees advance in their careers shows through their actions. Kathleen has successfully mentored six individuals this year alone, who began in frontline roles and worked their way up to management positions.
“A couple of years ago, an employee at one of my sites asked me why they didn’t see anyone who looked like them in leadership. I responded, ‘Why don’t we change that?’ This employee is now a salaried manager and one of the six individuals I’ve mentored, having been promoted to a management position from within,” Kathleen shares.
Impact and Leadership
By building a foundation of open opportunity and encouragement within their team, Kathleen is creating an environment that supports and challenges employees to pursue their dreams and reach their full potential. Creating such a supportive foundation and environment for growth opens the door for future generations to come who are looking for a chance to build a strong career.
Kathleen encourages employees to seek mentorship and to believe in their potential by emphasizing our three pillars: Belong, Act, and Thrive.
“You belong here; we are all part of the same community. At Sodexo, we want you to act within our communities to make them better. Use your resources to thrive and reach your full potential.”
The positivity Kathleen shows toward their team demonstrates the power of supportive and inclusive leadership. When leaders like Kathleen invest in their team’s development and well-being, they not only foster job satisfaction but also ignite a drive for personal and professional growth.
This dedication to recognizing and valuing each individual is reflected in Kathleen’s belief: “I make mistakes; I am not a mistake,” and they ensure that all the people who work for them know this too.
Kathleen’s story is a powerful example of what can be achieved with determination, support, and a commitment to making a difference. They exemplify our values, where leaders are encouraged to nurture talent, promote diversity, and create positive impacts in their communities. Their journey to Senior Area General Manager is not just a career path, but a beacon of inspiration for others to follow.
