Super Sustainable

  • Super Bowl LIV will be exciting for many reasons, including one of the lesser-known milestones: it will be a game-changer for sustainability.

Select drinks at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens will be served in recyclable aluminum cups which, unlike plastic, are infinitely recyclable. And, they are in keeping with the venue’s goal to become virtually plastic-free by gameday.

It’s “a forward-looking enhancement that will help us reduce our environmental impact in the months and years ahead, not only in Miami but in support of our global mission to make it better to be there in the communities which we serve,” said Steve Pangburn, Chief Executive Officer of Centerplate, the exclusive catering partner for Hard Rock Stadium.

The 20-ounce cups are the result of a collaboration between Centerplate, Ball Corporation and Bud Light, the NFL’s official beer sponsor. Fifty thousand of the cups will be available during the game, each one lightweight, sturdy and cool enough to keep beverages cold long past the halftime show. The cups will also have a special Super Bowl LIV logo, making it likely that many fans won’t recycle the cups, but save and reuse them.

After the game, the cups will continue to be available at the global entertainment destination throughout the year for Miami Dolphins games, University of Miami college football games, international soccer matches, concerts and all other events. As a result, the aluminum cups will help eliminate more than 500,000 plastic cups annually from Hard Rock Stadium’s supply chain.

Centerplate has also removed many other plastic items from its supply chain, instead now relying on an increased amount of bamboo and paper products.
